Support for Departments

American Friends of the British Museum has been pleased to support the needs of the curatorial and other departments at the British Museum. The following departments have recently benefited from grants made by the American Friends:

Department of Ancient Egypt and the Sudan for cataloguing and publishing the pre-dynastic collect, and to support Sudan Archaeological Research Projects

Department of Ancient Near East for the exhibition, Forgotten Empire: the World of Ancient Persia

Department of Asia for the exhibition, Voices of Bengal

Department of Coins and Medals for acquisitions

Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities for acquisitions

Department of Learning to support the James and Lee Slaughter Keeper of Learning & Information

Department of Prehistory and Europe for the Medieval Seals and Matrices Project

Department of Prints and Drawings for the exhibitions, Samuel Palmer: Vision and Landscape and A New World: England’s First View of America

To ensure the vitality and scholarly work of the curatorial departments, AFBM, working with the Museum, established the following support groups:

Caryatids - Greek and Roman Antiquities
Friends of the Ancient Near East
Patrons of Old Master Drawings

Funds raised help the departments acquire new works, host visiting scholars, and undertake research. Membership requires a minimum annual contribution of $5,000.

Gifts of art and artifacts may be made after consultation with American Friends of the British Museum and the appropriate Museum curator.

Please call the AFBM office at 212-737-1011 for more information.
